In today’s world, road safety is more important than ever. With an increasing population in the United States, the roads have only grown more crowded. Heavier traffic leads to a higher percentage and likelihood of accidents occurring. Around the world, more than 1.3 million people die every year in a car crash while another 50 million people are injured or disabled from crashes. In fact, car crashes are the 9th leading cause of death in the world. How can we reduce these numbers? Well, road safety falls in the hands of both state and federal leaders, as well as the citizens. It doesn’t matter how many rules are laid out, if people ignore them, consequences ensue.
Most road accidents are caused by human error; although, sometimes unmaintained roads and horrible weather conditions lead to accidents, as well. Here are some main factors that lead to traffic accidents: drunk driving, tiredness, speeding, road rage, failure to look or judge another car’s speed properly, losing control of the vehicle, tailgating, distraction, carelessness, and inexperience.
How can crashes and accidents be prevented? Well, the government, non-governmental organizations, civilians, and more need to start taking action. More awareness of speed limits, alcohol limitations, seat-belt usage, child restraints, texting, and construction zones needs to occur. New policies need to be put in place to create safer streets, and older (but good) policies need to be enforced harder for them to take proper effect. Vehicles need to continue to evolve to be safe modes of transportation for not only the driver, but for pedestrians and cyclists, as well.
In order to lower the number of accidents, officials need to assess current problems with current laws, rules, and systems to determine why accidents keep occurring. A new and improved road safety strategy can then be put in place, which will have set actions to help prevent crashes from happening.
If nothing is done, the Association for Safe International predicts that traffic injuries will jump to the fifth leading cause of death by 2030 in the world.
As you can see, road safety is extremely important. Thousands upon thousands die each year from a car accident in America. This number can go down, and one way is to properly abide by traffic signs and traffic devices.
